About The Rev. Dr. Joe McMurray
Rev. Joe is an innovative, dynamic leader, and a creative preacher and teacher with a focus on holistic healing. He places an added emphasis on poor, marginalized and disenfranchised people in diverse, multicultural populations. He has taught empowerment skills to survivors living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-threatening illnesses, and has done extensive work in grief/loss counseling and programming. Another emphasis of Rev. Joe’s ministry has been the arts in worship, including offerings of body prayer, and sacred dance for individuals and groups. His choreography was prominently featured in worship at the 2006 Region One/Seven Conference and the 2007 General Conference in Phoenix, AZ. He has also presented workshops on HIV and the Local Church, Spiritual Direction and Health Ministry at General and Regional Conferences. He was also a co-presenter for the Institute for Global Justice at the 2007 Region One/Seven Conference in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Rev. Joe received a Master of Divinity from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA, and a Doctor of Ministry at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA. In 2001, he also received his Spiritual Director certification from The Mercy Center in Burlingame, CA. Both Rev. Joe and his partner, Eric Cole, were born and raised in the Midwest – Peoria, IL, and Salina, KS, respectively. They celebrated their tenth anniversary in December, 2008. They have a three-year-old Lab/Lakeland Terrier Mix named Ellie, and a 9-month-old tuxedo kitten named Cioffi. |
